High Score

Growing up in the Champaign-Urbana area, I had no idea we had our own hip-hop scene. With the Chicago rap culture being so prevalent right now, I would expect that the Champaign rap scene would be largely nonexistent due to rappers moving the short distance up I-57 to pursue a career. I’ve been pleasantly surprised, however, with a few MC’s who operate almost purely out of C-U. Sure, the scene isn’t nearly as huge as Chicago’s, but that’s just another testament to what Champaign rappers are doing. They’re not trying to fit into anyone else’s mold but instead have found themselves in their own niche, and that’s admirable enough, I’d say.

Probably the most talented rapper (in my opinion) in the C-U area goes by the name of Jay Moses. Today, he brings us the first single off of his upcoming EP The Genius, which was recorded yesterday. The track, entitled “High Score,” is a hazy homage that many students at UIUC can relate to. Look for Moses’ upcoming project to be released on October 10th via Heirship Records, and for more singles to drop until then.
