For the second straight year, the ILLrock Block Party served as an end-of-the-year celebratory concert at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The day-long event, similar to Little 500 at Indiana University or Dillo Day at Northwestern University, went down this past Saturday in Urbana and featured a variety of musical guests. Artists such as Gramatik, Matoma, Exmag and Klevah took the stage on a beautiful, 75-degree day. Good vibes permeated the air at the corner of Goodwin Avenue and Oregon Street as students flocked to watch some of their favorite performers.
The ILLrock lasted from 2 pm to 11 pm. G.O.O.D Music‘s Big Sean closed out the affair with a strong, hour-long set. With the adidas Yeezy Boost on his feet, Sean Don went through songs from nearly every point of his career. The Detroit emcee began with “Paradise,” track number six on his newest album Dark Sky Paradise, then shimmied into some of his more popular verses such as “Gangbang,” which landed on Wiz Khalifa’s Cabin Fever mixtape, and “Burn,” which appeared on Meek Mill’s album Dreams and Nightmares. He also performed “Higher” and “Mula” from arguably his best project to date, the Detroit mixtape. And no B.I.G. concert would be complete without the dance anthem “A$$.” He ended the set with the outro from Dark Sky Paradise. illRoots‘ Mike Carson provided dope stage visuals for Sean to do his thing.
Big shout-out to Prime Social Group and Jay Goldberg Events for partnering on another successful ILLrock. Check out some photos from the party below, taken by Empire Taste, Domingo Tutu, Chris Smith and Jameel Bridgewater.
